Labouchere Strategy

The Labouchere Strategy, also known as the Cancellation System, is a roulette betting system that uses a predefined sequence of numbers.
Unlike progression systems such as Martingale or Fibonacci, the Labouchere Strategy attempts to achieve a specific profit target.
Players create a number sequence before starting the game.
Example:
1 - 2 - 3 - 4
The sum of all numbers equals the desired profit target:
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 units
How the Labouchere System Works
The first bet is calculated by adding the first and last numbers in the sequence.
Example:
Sequence:
1 - 2 - 3 - 4
Bet:
1 + 4 = 5 units

If the Bet Wins
Cross out the first and last numbers.
New sequence:
2 - 3
Next bet:
2 + 3 = 5 units
If the Bet Loses
Add the amount lost to the end of the sequence.
Sequence becomes:
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5
The process continues until all numbers have been cancelled.
When the sequence is completely removed, the target profit has been achieved.
Advantages
- Clearly defined profit goal
- Structured betting approach
- Flexible number sequences
- Popular among strategic players

Disadvantages
- Losing streaks can dramatically extend the sequence
- Bet sizes may become very large
- Requires careful tracking
- Can create significant bankroll pressure
Why Players Use Labouchere
Many players appreciate the system because it feels organized and goal-oriented.
Instead of simply chasing losses, the player works through a predefined plan.
The strategy can be customized by changing the starting sequence.

Mathematical Reality
The Labouchere Strategy changes only the betting pattern.
It does not alter the probability of winning.
The house edge remains:
• European Roulette: 2.70%
• American Roulette: 5.26%
Like all betting systems, it cannot overcome the mathematical advantage of the casino.
Example Session
Starting sequence:
1 - 2 - 3 - 4
Target profit:
10 units
Bet 1:
5 units → Lose
New sequence:
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5
Bet 2:
6 units
If long losing streaks occur, the sequence can grow rapidly and create large wagers.

Labouchere vs Fibonacci
Fibonacci:
- Fixed mathematical progression
- Simple rules
- Easier to follow
Labouchere:
- Custom sequence
- More flexible
- More complex tracking
Neither strategy changes the expected outcome of roulette.
Responsible Gambling Considerations
The Labouchere Strategy can create a false sense of control because it follows a structured plan.
However, long losing streaks may cause the sequence to expand significantly.
Players should set bankroll limits and avoid extending sequences indefinitely.
